The Twilight Zone

Deschute's Twilight Summer Ale is finally here. And now that summer is here too there is time, at last, to pour it into a tall, cool glass...

But where are all the glasses!?!?!? That's not fair... That's not fair at all. There was time now... There was all the time I needed!!

Mussel Men

Prince Edward Island is home to the finest men in all the known world.

Today they have arrived at the mainland bearing gifts from their fabled land. Prized mussels (the secret to the islander's fine physique, vast knowledge, and unbounded fortune)!!!

Here, sautéed with butter, white wine, lemon, and garlic, they offer we, locked upon land, the opportunity to taste the island life - if but for a fleeting, majestic moment...

Mussels return to the Acres.

Pirates, Porters, & パチンコ

Japan.  It was 148 years ago, today, that Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry "persuaded" Japan - a handful of convincing U.S. warships - into opening their borders to the West.  Despite his less than noble tactics, North American's may now awe in wonder of Japan's clever creations, grand customs, beautiful cities, and amazing beer.

Thus, we indulge in Baird Brewery's exceptional Kurofune Porter.  Named after Perry's "black ships", Kurofune is a full bodied explosion of dark roasty-malt flavour.  So good that it is up there with パチンコ as one of Japan's greatest achievements.  At the Acres until 鎖国 returns.

La Fée Verte

Ah, the mystery and intrigue of Absinthe. Come hither, marvel at its spectacular jade cloak, behold its magical, opalescent transformation. With every sip, images of smokey Parisian cafes, diffused light, the eloquent banter of bohemian intellectuals animated, inspired by the Green Fairy's warm embrace. The seductress, the outcast, the legend. Welcome.

At Six Acres we offer up some of the finest, served two ways:

For one

One dose of absinthe, a carafe of cold water, a spoon, sugar and a brouilleur filled with ice. Place a sugar cube within the brouilleur, sit the brouilleur atop your glass, apply water to achieve desired dilution, stir, enjoy. Lovely.

For two

Two doses of absinthe, two slotted spoons, sugar cubes and a fountain filled with ice water.

Align your glass beneath the fountains spigot, lay a spoon atop your glass, place a sugar cube onto the spoon, turn the tap, adjust the drip, slowly, gently, achieve desired dilution, stop drip, stir the sugar with your spoon, sip, relax. Oh joy.

p.s. you will not hallucinate

Romper Room

I used to love Romper Room in my youth. My only dismay was waiting what seemed like endless years for my name to be called through the magic mirror. Crushing.

So, in the interest of giving all of you nameless youth your due recognition, I would like to shout out to you, our dear friends!!!!

I see you all!!!!!!!!!!

Five-O de May-O

First off, we're not big fans of war. Actually, we're pretty scared of guns (well most of us anyway... some enjoy occasional trips to the range with an AK-47). We're also pretty big fans of the French (Montreal, Trois Monts, and l'Arc de Triomphe all A++ in our books) and of Mexico (sombreros, Tulum, and tacos all make us smile).

All that being said, on May 5, 1862 we're glad that Mexican forces had guns, and we're glad they beat the French (sorry guys).

We raise a glass to all those who gave their lives on both sides of the Battle of Puebla, that your names may live on this and every Cinco de Mayo.

The value of π

In 1897, the Indiana Pi Bill suggested that the state should make the legal value of pi 3.2.
Shortly thereafter the Indiana Senate struck down the bill.
Phew.
